Carpet offers warmth to sit on or work on and can provide more stable temperatures for foot and leg comfort near the floor. Today, most commercial carpets are treated with stain resistance and soil retardance agents in the manufacturing process. This additional treatment can potentially lessen time demands and offer cost savings in the maintenance of the carpet.

Some Common Carpet Conditions:

Some discolourations, such as yellowing, have become more obvious with the introduction of lighter carpet colouration. Yellowing can be caused by a variety of outside influences, such as pollutants from heating fuels, changes in alkalinity, cleaning solutions and atmospheric or environmental contaminants. Not all carpet yellowing can be removed. The use of acetic acid (white vinegar), citrus acid and tartaric acid is often successful in eradicating many cases of yellowing. In some cases, the use of an alkaline detergent solution prior to the use of the acid rinse may cause permanent yellowing. Contact a professional cleaning company before attempting to clean carpet yellowing.
The ability of carpet tufts to retain their visible shape under foot traffic. Following appropriate guidelines for carpet care will minimize texture loss.
Cooler outside temperatures with the accompanying low humidity often create static electricity. To avoid the problem, look for carpets with built-in anti-static protection. A humidifier added to the room can help to control static build-up.
In most cases, spills and stains must be tended to immediately. Their severity is affected by the type of carpet fibre, colour of carpet, how long stain has been let to stand, and cause of the stain. For more information on stain removal, please see our Recommended Stain Removal Procedures in the Maintenance Section.
Sprouting is a term used when long pile tufts emerge above the normal pile surface. Simply clip the extended yarn tufts with sharp scissors. Don’t try to pull them out since you may also pull other fibres out in the process.
A build-up of dry soil particles and similar materials the cling to carpet fibres. Thorough and frequent vacuuming is key. If vacuuming is not enough, contact a professional cleaning company.
Sharp-edged objects can grab or snag a carpet fibre. When this happens, clip the snag off. If the snag is especially large, contact a professional cleaning company.
New carpeting, especially cut pile, will shed little bits of fibre for a period of time. Eventually, these loose fibres will be taken up in the vacuum cleaner. Shedding is more common with wool than with nylon or other synthetics
Shading/ Pile Reversal (also known as watermarking or pooling) sometimes occurs in cut pile carpets. This is not a manufacturing defect – it is rather a visual effect caused by the tips of the tufts reflecting light differently than the sides of the tufts. Temporary pile reversal can be caused, for example, by footprints or a vacuum cleaner. This is an aesthetic quality in the design, not a defect. When purchasing a carpet, ask the retailer if the style you prefer will show this condition.
Carpet usually comes in 12-foot widths, making seams necessary in most rooms. Visible seams are not a defect unless they have been improperly made or the material has a defect, making the seam more pronounced than normal. It is highly recommended to apply seam sealer to all seams at time of installation. The more dense and uniform the carpet texture, the more visible the seams will be. Seams shouldn’t be more visible than when the carpet is first installed. With frequent vacuuming, the seams should become less visible
Pilling or small balls of fibre can appear, depending on the type of carpet fibre and traffic. Clip off the pills; however, if the pills cover a large area, contact a professional cleaning company
Pile crushing or matting may be caused by the entanglement and compression of pile fibres from heavy traffic or excessive soiling. It can be minimized by maintaining the carpet with a ‘beater-bar” type vacuum cleaner.
Hairy effect on fabric surface caused by wild fibres or slack yarn twist, by fibres slipping out of yarn in either service or wet cleaning. It can be corrected by shearing in the manufacturing process and by a professional cleaner. Carpet of continuous filament yarn is fuzzed by filament snagging or breaking.
This may occur occasionally along the walls or at the seams, if seam sealing was incorrectly done during installation. Do not pull the yarns. Contact your retailer or the installer.
The weight of heavy furniture can put indentations in carpet. Some depression may be permanent. Use furniture glides or small area rugs under the legs of heavy furniture pieces, or move furniture a few inches backward or sideways so that the wear is not concentrated in one place. These depressions may be removed or reduced by steaming and gently rubbing the affected area. Contact a professional cleaning company for their recommendations.
Filtration soiling may appear as dark or grayish lines on carpet along walls, stairways, and under doors. It is caused by airflow over and through carpet, trapping fine airborne soils on the carpet surface. These types of stains require aggressive chemical solutions for removal. Contact a professional cleaning company for assistance.
Give your carpet the normal protection from direct sunlight given to any coloured fabric. Fading may also be caused by emissions from heating fuels and chemicals or household cleaning agents. Seek the advice of a professional cleaning company to evaluate the colour loss.
Some new carpets and underpad may have a noticeable odour. Such odours usually disappear within a few days with ventilation and frequent vacuuming.
Any burn should be taken care of immediately. First, snip off the damaged fibres. Then use a soapless cleaner and sponge with water. If the damage is extensive, contact a professional carpet cleaning company.
In wall-to-wall carpeting, high heat and humidity may cause rippling. If the carpet remains rippled during normal humidity, contact a professional to re-stretch the carpet with a power stretcher (not with a knee kicker).
Furniture and traffic may crush the pile of the carpet. Frequent vacuuming in high traffic areas and glides under heavy furniture can help the problem. Rotating the furniture to change traffic patterns can also help to minimize changes in appearance.
